Cupping is a form of traditional medicine –not only in China, but worldwide– in which a cup is applied to the skin after removal of the oxygen inside the cup to create a 'vacuum effect'.
Cupping is applied to certain acupuncture points and to areas affected by pain to dispel stagnation, stimulate the flow of blood and open up the pores, allowing toxins to be drawn out of the body.
In China, cupping is used primarily to treat musculoskeletal and pain conditions, as well as respiratory conditions such as bronchitis, asthma, colds and flu. Marks in the skin can remain after the cups are removed, but these are not painful and will only last for 2 to 3 days.
